Sam Stern entered the culinary world as something of a wunderkind. He published his first cookbook, ‘Cooking Up A Storm’, at the tender age of 14. Ten years later, Sam has released six more cookbooks – on everything from vegetarian food to quick eats to a culinary Bible for students.

His newest release, ‘Too Good To Share’, tackles cooking for one.

After Nyne’s Laura Andrew caught up with Sam to talk cooking tips, tea and the ultimate meal.

So you published your first book at 14. How did your passion for food start so young?

I have a massive family with 2 vegetarians, 1 vegan and a couple of heavy meat eaters. Every meal time I had to cater for all these preferences so I got drafted in to help out by my Mum. I learnt to love it and my passion started from there. I just wanted to expand my repertoire and skill set, so I kept cooking new, challenging and exciting things. Also, food is delicious and why wouldn’t you love it!

You’ve recently published ‘Too Good to Share’ – which recipes are you most excited about?

All of them! I made sure that they all delivered maximum flavour whilst keeping the recipes and ingredients as simple as possible.

What advice would you give to someone who knows absolutely nothing about cooking?

Get someone to cook with you at the beginning. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and if you do, blame them! Keep it simple and don’t be afraid to ask for help. You can even tweet me with questions @sam_stern

What would you have as your last meal on Earth and why?

A full roast chicken with all the trimmings. Oh and loads of gravy! It reminds me of family and happy memories. Can’t beat a roast!

Allegedly, you’re a big tea enthusiast . Favourite type?

Yorkshire gold. Well brewed and strong with just a splash of milk. Some green teas do the job on occasion too.

You’ve written a cookbook for practically everyone by this point – vegetarians, students and complete novices. What’s next?

Now that would be telling…. All I can say is that it will be very useful, easy to use and full of delicious food!
